Possible cause Remedy
  Heater is not securely mounted in support and draws in exhaust gas.
Exhaust gas gasket not fitted.
Loosen 2 M6x20 screws at the mounting plate (side panel) and position heater correctly.
Remove heater, install new exhaust gas gasket and reinstall heater
  Heater's installation position is not permissible Install heater in permissible installation position in accordance with installation instructions
  Distance between the combustion air intake opening and the discharge opening of the exhaust pipe is to small.
Heater sucks exhaust gas as combustion air.
Change the position of the combustion air intake opening or the discharge opening of the exhaust pipe (minimum distance 20 cm)
  Fuel lines of heater not properly connected.
Flow and return pipes were interchanged.
Connect fuel lines correctly
  A non-return valve may have been installed in the fuel line between heater and vehicle tank, or in the vehicle tank itself (intermediate fuel reservoir is not ventilated). Install bypass valve (venting valve) in accordance with installation kit ID-no. 64545B.
With one-line systems, only heaters of the type Thermo Top C or E can be installed.
Heater's heat exchanger is hot, engine is cold Kinked coolant hose or system has not been bled completely Check routing of coolant hoses.
Vent cooling system in accordance with manufacturer's directions
Heater's heat exchanger is hot, engine is cold No pumping action of circulating pump Check for continuity and housing ground connection at connector X18 (wire bk / br).
If continuity is not indicated, circulating pump is defective.
Replace circulating pump in accordance with directions given in the workshop manual
